Dr. Hosken has expertise in designing and executing empirical analyses that measure the impact of competition on market outcomes. Early in his career at the FTC, he led many major merger investigations in consumer products, industrial products, and retailing industries. He also worked on multiple merger challenges including the original FTC vs. Staple/Office Depot litigation. In his role as a Deputy Assistant Director, Dr. Hosken designed and managed many large research projects addressing competition issues including the Slotting Allowance in the Grocery Industry Study, Patent Assertion Entity Study and the Physician and Healthcare Facility Merger Study.

Dr. Hosken has published studies covering a wide range of antitrust topics including the impact of vertical integration on competition, retail competition, the effects of selective contracting on pricing, and competition in energy markets. His most prominent research area has been evaluating the competitive impact of consummated mergers (merger retrospectives).  While at the FTC, Dr. Hosken was selected to speak about the value of merger retrospectives to audiences of antitrust enforcers throughout the world. His research has been published in leading economics journals including the RAND Journal of Economics, Journal of Law and Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Journal of Industrial Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization, and the Journal of Economic and Management Strategy.
