A leading scholar of markets and prices, he served as the Director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and the State at The University of Chicago and the Director of the Energy Policy Institute at Chicago (EPIC). In addition, Professor Topel previously served as editor of the Journal of Political Economy from 1993 to 2003, and on the editorial board of the American Economic Review, the two leading professional journals in economics. Professor Topel was also a founding editor of the Journal of Labor Economics, and in 2004, he was elected an inaugural Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists.
