Nick Weir is a Partner at Econic Partners with close to five decades of experience in trading, investment and consulting related to securities, commodities, over-the-counter derivative investment products, risk management and foreign exchange. His expertise includes evaluating the risk management exposure of major trading and investment firms.

Mr. Weir has testified and consulted in hundreds of complex matters before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the New York Stock Exchange, the National Futures Association (NFA), the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, US Bankruptcy Court, the American Arbitration Association, and in a number of federal court cases. In addition, he has served as an arbitrator for the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) now called the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the NFA.

Mr. Weir successfully testified in the landmark case of De Kwiatkowsi vs. Bear Stearns on the customs, practices and duties of counterparties in the international foreign exchange markets. Mr. Weir also successfully testified in connection with the bankruptcy of MF Global. He opined on the suitability of MF Global’s repurchase-to-maturity transactions leading up to its bankruptcy and on the associated conduct by its directors and officers. 

Mr. Weir also brings extensive experience as a consulting and testifying expert in numerous investigations and litigation matters involving antitrust and market manipulation issues. He has testified on behalf of fifteen of the world’s largest commercial and investment banks in the WM/Reuters benchmark foreign exchange pricing litigation. He has served as the primary consulting expert on investigations related to the foreign exchange market, alleged price fixing in the gold and silver markets, and spoofing in the interest rate futures market. He testified before the CFTC in connection with allegations of market price manipulation in platinum and palladium in the New York commodity exchanges (NYMEX and COMEX), as well as on behalf of Ferruzzi Finanziaria in a major regulatory hearing before the Chicago Board of Trade (“CBOT”) involving the alleged “cornering” of the world soybean market in the matter of the CBOT vs Ferruzzi.  In each case, Mr. Weir’s testimony and consulting expertise contributed to settlement resolutions of these matters. 

Mr. Weir holds an MA in Economics and Finance from Webster University, Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Weir has also completed executive programs in finance at the U. of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and the University of Virginia’s Darden School. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the University of St. Thomas Law School in St. Paul, MN. Previously, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Futures Industry Association, Chicago Division.
