It is with tremendous sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend, colleague, and mentor, Professor Marius Schwartz.

Marius was a highly respected economist who made extraordinary contributions across academia, government, and consulting. During his distinguished career, he served as a Professor of Economics at Georgetown University for more than four decades, a chief economist at the Federal Communications Commission, the Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Economics at the U.S. Department of Justice, and a senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

His influential work in Industrial Organization helped shape the field and inspired generations of students to pursue careers in economics, particularly in industrial organization and competition policy. Marius was a trusted mentor to many: he took personal joy in others’ success, and he was always willing to share his time, ideas, and experience.

Even beyond his remarkable professional accomplishments, what set Marius apart was his boundless enthusiasm, infectious energy, and never-ending optimism. He had a rare ability to make the complex and abstract accessible and tangible, blending insight, humor and storytelling in a way that captivated students, colleagues, and clients alike. Marius had a zest for life and brought energy, kindness, warmth, and intellectual curiosity to every interaction.

At Econic, Marius was a close friend, a valued member of our team, and one of the firm’s most influential champions and recruiters. He was pivotal in bringing many talented economists to the firm, and he leaves an enduring legacy in the economists he recruited, trained, and inspired. Marius epitomized Econic’s commitment to intellectual rigor, deep curiosity about markets and competition, collegiality, and mutual support.

It is safe to say that anyone who ever spent time with Marius will remember him as both a great economist and an inspiring, uplifting person. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marius’s family, friends, colleagues, and students.

In honor of Marius, Global Competition Review has published an obituary here with messages from colleagues and friends.
