Jonathan Orszag is a Founding Partner of Econic Partners LLC, a global economic consulting firm. He previously was a co-founder Compass Lexecon, LLC, another economic consulting firm. As a consultant, Orszag has conducted economic and financial analysis on a wide range of complex issues in antitrust, regulatory, policy, and litigation matters for corporations and public-sector entities. These engagements have involved a wide array of mergers and other economic matters in various markets, such as the healthcare, retail, life sciences, sports, media, financial services, and high-tech industries. He has testified before the United States Congress, U.S. and international courts, the European Court of First Instance, and U.S. and international regulatory authorities on competition and economic policy issues.
In 2026, Orszag was named by the Global Competition Review as the Economist of the Year, which is awarded annually to the competition economist whose superior technical skill, practical judgement and excellence in client service demonstrates that they are among the very best in the field. Previously, Orszag was named the youngest member of “the world’s 40 brightest young antitrust lawyers and economists” in GCR’s “40 Under 40” survey and as one of the world’s “Best Young Competition Economists.” Since 2007, Orszag has been named as one of the foremost competition economists by Lexology (previously known as Who’s Who Legal).
Prior to entering the private sector, Orszag served as the Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Director of the Office of Policy and Strategic Planning. In this capacity, Orszag was the Secretary of Commerce’s chief policy adviser and was responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of policy initiatives, from telecommunications issues to international trade issues. Previously, Orszag served as an Economic Policy Advisor on President Clinton’s National Economic Council. In 1999, the Corporation for Enterprise Development awarded Orszag its leadership award for “forging innovative public policies to expand economic opportunity in America.”
Orszag has taught at both USC and UCLA. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, as well as the Board of the First Tee (both nationally and in Los Angeles) and the TGR Foundation (formerly the Tiger Woods Foundation). Orszag has also served on the Board of Directors of Ibrix (sold to Hewlett Packard) and JMP Group (sold to Citizens Bank). Orszag previously served on the Academic and Regulatory Advisory Council for Coinbase One River Asset Management.
Orszag received a M.Sc. from Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar. He graduated summa cum laude in Economics from Princeton University, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was named a USA Today All-USA College Academic Team. He is also a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Orszag and his wife (Mary) have three daughters (Baye, Eden, and Maine). Orszag is an avid golfer, having played all top 100 golf courses in the world, and is a lifelong Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. Orszag and his wife served as Executive Producers of the Emmy-nominated movie, Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid, and Orszag served as an adviser on George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ Money Monster.
